History

Telephone service in Breda dates back to 1905, when the presidents of the Breda rural companies lines and the Breda Telephone Company got together and formed the Breda Switchboard Company. At that time, they voted that a switchboard be purchased and placed in Breda.

In 1905, there were 26 town subscribers and 14 rural lines. In this same year, a phone was placed in the Chicago NW depot, and a phone booth was put in one of the business places. There, shareholders could come to use the phone free, and non-shareholders had to pay 10 cents to use the phone. The length of call was not to exceed 5 minutes.

In July of 1907, the switchboard was moved to the home of Mr. and Mrs. C.A. Bruning, where it was to remain for 33 years.

The popularity of the telephone increased to such an extent that in 1910 a new switchboard was necessary, and an American Bell type was installed. By 1940, the exchange had 138 town subscribers, 18 rural lines, and four toll lines. In the same year,

the switchboard moved from the Bruning home to the City Hall building. The separate telephone companies operated there until 1966, when the Breda Switchboard Company, the Breda Telephone Company, and the Breda Farmers Coop joined together and formed the present company known as the Breda Telephone Corporation.

The Breda Telephone Corporation built a new office and equipment building in 1967 and put in all touch-tone dial service, this being the first complete touch-tone dial company in the United States. All the rural lines were buried at that time, and in 1975 all town lines were buried.

In 1971, the Lidderdale Telephone Coop was dissolved, and their members purchased membership shares in the Breda Telephone Corporation. All telephone lines were buried in Lidderdale, and mobile telephone service was installed. In 1975, Breda Telephone Corporation purchased 100% of the shares in Prairie Telephone Company at Yale, Iowa, and now operates that company. In 1978, Farragut and Pacific Junction exchanges were purchased from Continental Telephone Company of Iowa. In 1985, the Macedonia exchange was acquired from General Telephone Company of the Midwest.

Tele-Services, Ltd. became a wholly owned subsidiary of Breda Telephone Corporation when the Articles of Incorporation were written and signed by the company in July 1983. Tele-Services, Ltd. began offering cable television service in Breda, Iowa later that year. Hamburg and Sidney were added to the system with their purchase from Midwest Cablevision, Inc. on April 13, 1984. Service areas were later expanded in December 1990, to Beaver Lake, Nebraska; Farragut, Riverton, and Thurman, Iowa; with the purchase of the cable television franchises from Communications Construction, Inc. Nine other service areas, namely, Bayard, Churdan, Grand Junction, Lohrville, Malvern, Neola, Oakland, Tabor, and Treynor, were added in March of 1993 with the purchase of the Oak Cable Systems, Inc.

In 1992, Breda Telephone Corporation entered into an agreement with the National Rural Telecommunications Cooperative (NRTC) to market and sell Direct Broadcast Service (DBS). The company was granted the exclusive right to all non-cabled residences in the nine Iowa and Nebraska counties of Carroll, Sac, Greene, Crawford, Fremont, Cass, Otoe, Richardson, and Nemaha, as well as to cabled residences in the Iowa counties of Sac and Fremont and the Nebraska county of Cass. The DBS services to be marketed and sold consisted of various programming packages. The service commencement date was July 1994. The DBS operations were sold to Golden Sky Systems on January 11, l999.

Between June 1986 and July 1991, Breda Telephone Corporation, or one of its subsidiaries, became a partner in five new partnerships that were formed by various cellular and independent telephone companies to provide cellular service.

In June of 1995, Breda and other partners formed Alpine Communications L.C. Alpine was formed by 14 partners, most of them Iowa Independent Telephone Companies, for the purpose of purchasing US West properties. On April 10th, 1997, Alpine Communications L.C. took possession of six telephone exchanges, five in northeast Iowa and one in West Central Iowa, totaling about 6,500 access lines. Alpine also purchased cable television properties in northeast Iowa in 1998. Breda now has a 15.79% interest in Alpine Communications.

BTC, Inc. is the newest subsidiary and was incorporated in 1997. This subsidiary is presently offering Internet services and long-distance services.

In June 1998, Breda Telephone Corporation acquired 100% ownership of Westside Independent Telephone Company from Art and Mary Zerwas. Westside Independent Telephone Company owns and provides the telephone service in Westside, Iowa.

Additionally, in a related transaction, Tele-Services, Ltd. a wholly owned subsidiary of Breda Telephone Corporation, acquired Westside Communications, Inc. Westside Communications, Inc. owned and operated the cable television systems in Westside and Arcadia, Iowa.

Also in October 1998, Tele-Services, Ltd. purchased the Auburn Cable television system from New Path Communication, L.C.

In addition, Westside Independent Telephone Company, a wholly owned subsidiary of Breda Telephone Corporation, has a 33.33% ownership interest in Quad County Communications. This joint venture has built a fiber optic network from Odebolt to Denison.
