West Bend is located in the southeast part of Palo Alto County along the west branch of The Des Moines River on Highway 15, 9 miles south of Highway 18 and 10 miles west of Highway 169.

TELEPHONE COMPANY & SERVICES:
Northwest Telephone Cooperative Association in Havelock, IA began business in 1963. We service the areas of Havelock, West Bend, Plover, and Curlew. Subsidiary, Northwest Communications, Inc. serves cable TV to Havelock, West Bend, Plover, Mallard, and Rolfe areas. Other services we offer are CommNet Cellular, local and statewide paging, and prepaid calling cards. We are now an Internet service provider under the name of Northwest Internet Services.

SCHOOLS:
St. Peter & Paul's Catholic School has 80 students in grades 1-8. West Bend/Mallard Community School has 485 students in K-12.

LOCAL LEGENDS & HISTORY:
The first settlement in the county was located on the west bend of the Des Moines River in 1855. The people of the settlement moved four miles to the east when the Chicago, Rock Island Railroad came through the area. The settlers decided to keep the name West Bend. Throughout the years, in this rich farming community people prospered and the town of West Bend served the needs of the people of the area.
