Walnut Telephone Company provides telephone
service, 800 service, voice-mail, paging, Internet access, CATV, cellular and refurbishing of
antique phones. Office number is 712-784-2211.
SCHOOLS:
Walnut Community Schools have an enrollment of 310 students in grades k-12.
TOURIST ATTRACTIONS & RECREATION:
Walnut is Iowa's Antique City with dozens of
dealers, brick street, old fashioned street lights, and a turn-of-the-century Opera House. Prairie
Rose Lake is six miles north of Walnut. The lake provides boating, fishing, swimming, and
camping. The local ball park hosts many baseball and softball games during summer months. A
modern playground located at the school is available for children of all ages.
BUSINESS & INDUSTRY:
The primary business of the area is antiques. Related businesses
include: furniture refinishing, upholstering and construction and crafts.
AGRICULTURE:
Farming is a major industry with emphasis on corn, soybeans, cattle, and hogs.
Related businesses include a local elevator and farm supply store.
LODGING & RESTAURANTS:
There are three Bed & Breakfasts and two motels in Walnut. The Villager
Restaurant and McDondald's are near I-80 at exit 46. Aunt B's Kitchen and
Sandy's are the two restaurants in downtown Walnut.
FESTIVALS & CELEBRATIONS:
On Father's Day Weekend each year the Amvets host the
Antique Walk with 16 blocks of dealers and 30,000 visitors. The Christmas Walk is held the
Friday and Saturday after Thanksgiving each year. The downtown is decorated for the season
with a large Christmas tree in the center of the intersection. An annual Car Show is held each
August with close to 200 autos on display.
CHURCHES:
Local churches include St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Our Savior Lutheran Church,
Peace United Church of Christ, First Presbyterian, Calvary Baptist Church, and Monroe
Methodist Chapel.
