The Montezuma Mutual Telephone Co. uses digital switching and all
buried cable plant to provide high quality voice and data
circuits to meet the needs of business and residential customers.
Our telephone company offers custom calling features as: voice
mail, 3-way calling, call waiting, paging, and Internet services.
SCHOOLS:
One look will reveal the exceptional pride our people have in
their school and how they have generously provided facilities for
a quality education. Located on a 35 acre campus at the north
edge of the city are kindergarten, elementary, junior and senior
high schools, parking lots, playground area, lighted athletic
fields and running track. The school provides a well-rounded
academic program that reflects Iowa's reputation for education
excellence.
WELCOME MESSAGE:
We say Montezuma is a community rather than a city. That's
because we're a unique blend of people, living, working and
playing together in an area that includes something for everyone
and is as diverse as its people. We are proud of our past,
enjoying the present, and planning for the future. A terrific
place to live, raise a family, work, play, retire, be educated
and do business. You'll see. Just take a closer look!
TOURIST ATTRACTIONS & RECREATION:
You have to see the recreation areas, in and around Montezuma, to
believe them. You can picnic, play softball, fish, golf, ride
bikes, swim, or just relax in the summer, hunt and hike in the
fall and snowmobile and ski in the winter. And if you prefer lake
life, you can live at Lake Ponderosa, a private lake development
with over 1,000 acres and two lakes. Also adjoining Montezuma is
Diamond Lake, a 300-acre park and 90-acre lake, where you can
enjoy the great out-of-doors. There are fishing jetties, camping
facilities, shelter houses, and a playground area.
BUSINESS & INDUSTRY:
Few towns can match us for industry so we'll add
"fortunate" to the list; we appreciate our industrial
community. Montezuma has received national publicity as the place
"Where the American Dream Came True" and "The Home
of Successful Do-It-Yourselfers" because of the many
businesses which were founded, grown and nurtured by local
residents. These include: Brownells, Inc.; Rinehart
Manufacturing; Sig Manufacturing Co.; Sutherland Printing Co.;
Watts Vault & Monument Co.; Wilco All-Pro& Supply Co.;
Fun Valley Ski Area; and Lake Ponderosa. Plus we're proud that
Magna International selected our town for their Montezuma
Manufacturing division and Lage Products moved in from nearby
Tama County. Our community-wide enthusiasm and support for
entrepreneurs help "grow" all these businesses.
AGRICULTURE:
The gently rolling countryside around Montezuma supports Iowa's
traditional farm economy well. Local farmers provide on-farm jobs
and income while creating a need for businesses that can provide
farm-specific goods and services.
LODGING & RESTAURANTS:
For lodging we have Breese Sign Inn on Hwy 63 and English Valley
Bed and Breakfast Cuisine located north of town. Our local
restaurants include Sandy's Soda Fountain, The Apple Basket, The
Hometown Restaurant, and Picadilly Pizza.
LOCAL LEGENDS & HISTORY:
Our community is as intriguing as its name, Montezuma. Named in
honor of the last emperor of the Aztecs by veterans of the war
with Mexico, the town was founded in 1848 and designated the
county seat of Poweshiek County.
REAL ESTATE:
Our community has an array of homes, apartments and mobile home
courts. There's an apartment complex for retired persons in town
plus cottages and year-round homes at Lake Ponderosa. With the
help of our real estate agents: Citizens First of
Montezuma-Better Homes & Garden, Kercheval DL, Lowry-McNaul,
and Montezuma Realty they'll find a home for you in the Montezuma
community.
CHURCHES:
You'll see spiritual freedom and cooperation among the churches
in the Montezuma community. There are five Protestant churches
and a Roman Catholic congregation in town and a total of 15
churches in the area.
LIBRARY:
The Montezuma Public Library has more than 12,000 volumes along
with periodicals, tapes, and records and has a weekly story-hour
for young children.
