LOCATION:
Meriden is located in nothwest Iowa on Iowa Highway 3 in Cherokee County.
Meriden is served by the Chicago Central and Pacific Railroad.

Mayor Dunn would like to welcome you to Meriden. You will find 193 friendly residents who take pride in their home and community. Meriden celebrated its quasquicentennial in 1995. We are also proud of our school's excellent music program which produced State Jazz Band champions in 1991, 1992, and 1994.

SCHOOLS:
Meriden is in the Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn School District which has an enrollment of approximitely 700 students. Meriden has an elementary building that contains kindergarten, fourth, and fifth graders. Western Iowa Technical College is building a new campus in the neighboring city of Cherokee. There are also four-year colleges and other two-year colleges within driving distance of Meriden.

RECREATION:
There are over 300 acres of parks in Cherokee County. Camping, hiking, picnicking, and canoeing on the Inkpaduta Canoe Trail are available within a few minutes drive from Meriden.

LOCAL SERVICES:
Meriden receives its water supply from Cherokee County Rural Water. MidAmerican Energy supplies the city with electricity and natural gas. Meriden receives cable TV service from Wetherell CATV. Fire and emergency service is provided by the Sheriden-Liberty Fire Association that has 15 trained volunteers. Plans are underway to construct a new fire station in the city of Meriden. Cherokee County also uses the E911 system for emergency protection.

ECONOMY:
Like most communities in Iowa, agriculture is the backbone of our area economy. Corn, beans, cattle, and hogs are major sources of income. Employment opportunities in our area have been on the increase in recent years. Because of our convenient location, many Meriden residents that work in other communities can commute to work within fifteen minutes.

BUSINESSES:
First Farmer's Cooperative is the mainstay of Meriden's business district. The Meriden elevator is part of a cooperative which provides grain storage, fertilizer, seed, feed, marketing, and other services to the agricultural community. Located in Meriden is the home office of the C-M-L Telephone Cooperative. We also have a full-service gas station, two antique shops, a leather shop, and repair shop.

RESTAURANT:

If you like a cozy place to eat with a unique railroad theme, the Whistle Stop is the place for you. The Whistle Stop offers a large variety of hamburgers, as well as dinners and specialty items.

REAL ESTATE:
The city of Meriden has a stable market for individual homes. There are also three apartment buildings in town, with the newest being completed in 1994.

CHURCHES:
The Meriden Evangelical Free Church serves the community of Meriden. The church sponsors an active Awana program for girls and boys from grades kindergarten to 6th grade. The Maryhill Catholic Church and the Oakdale Evangelical Free Church are country churches located within minutes of Meriden.

LIBRARY:
The city of Meriden is a financial supporter of the municipal library in the neighboring city of Cleghorn. It has an inter-library loan program which allows access to libraries across the United States.

HISTORY:
Meriden originally was named Hazard after a railroad family. At one time there was an ordinance which prevented people from picking up night crawlers.
