TELEPHONE COMPANY & SERVICES:
West Iowa Telephone Company provides private line telephone service to the
towns of Alton, Anita, Calumet, Marcus, Quimby, Oyens, Remsen and Sutherland
and the surrounding rural area. The company uses digital switching and
predominantly buried cable plant to provide high quality voice and data
circuits to meet the needs of business and residential customer needs West
Iowa Telephone also offers custom calling features, voice mail, video
conferencing, and internet services to its customers. Our customers have
centralized equal access with Iowa Network Services as the provider of this
service. Both intralata and interlata equal access is available. All
outgoing long distance calls placed by our customers are routed over 100%
fiber optics facilities.
SCHOOLS:
MMC Community School, with the high school and
elementar located in Marcus, have an enrollment of 700.
WELCOME MESSAGE:
Marcus is a growing community. A new nursing
home facility opened in 1994 and in 1995 we saw completion of
the new swimming pool recreation area and park playground
renovation. We welcome businesses and residents to join us as we
plan for an exciting future.
TOURIST ATTRACTIONS & RECREATION:
1993 saw completion of a new all
weather recreation track. A 9 hole golf course is inside city
limits. Extensive park facilities include volleyball, softball
and other family activities. Iowa's finest recreation area, the
Iowa Great Lakes, is located less than hour away.
AGRICULTURE:
The land in this area is some of the
finest agricultural production land in the world. Beef and pork
production are major industries and many residents work in
related fields.
BUSINESS & INDUSTRY:
Major employers include Sands of Iowa,
specializing in certified seed for agriculture; K Products,
major world wide marketers of promotional merchanise; Marcus
Lumber Company, a major area retailer of building materials; and
Schmillen Construction Company a building and excavation
contracting firm. Wells Blue Bunny, a world wide Ice Cream
production leader, is located just 20 minutes away from Marcus.
LODGING & RESTAURANTS:
Our community is served by four full
service restaurants, as well as seasonal and convenience store
operations. National franchise motels are located in both nearby
Cherokee and LeMars.
LOCAL LEGENDS & HISTORY:
Marcus celebrates its 125th year in
1996. It has a strong history of community pride, highlighted by
a $1,000,000 fund campaign to delvelop a nursing home in 1993. A
Medical Center, Senior Citizens Center and a Community Center
have been born from similar drives in the past.
FESTIVALS & CELEBRATIONS:
Marcus hosts a Community Agricultural
Fair the second weekend of August each year. It has done so since
1936. All events are free and it serves as a "Homecoming" weekend
for many each year. The Marcus Chamber of Commerce sponsors many
promotions during the year, including a holiday festival each
December.
REAL ESTATE:
Clean , well-kept, affordable housing is available.
New homes are under construction each year. Low rent apartment
housing is available to qualified parties. Industrial sites are
available through Marcus Economic Development Corporation,

CHURCHES:
Churches in our community include Roman Catholic,
Methodist, Missouri Synod Lutheran, and LCA Lutheran.
Congregations of other denominations are located in nearby
communities.
LIBRARY:
The W.L. Gund Library, founded in memory of a former
resident, has extensive hours and a modern facility.
BRAGGING RIGHTS:
The Marcus plant of K Products produces more
than 45,000 embroidered promotional items(caps, jackets, emblems)
each working day.
