BUSINESS & INDUSTRY:
Being the small town that we are, we keep striving to grow. Presently we have Kirkman Manufacturing, Payne Siding Co., Plumb & Son's Tilling, Plumb Insulation, an all volunteer fire department with a membership of 25, and a Post Office.

AGRICULTURE:
We are located in the bread basket of the nation. Everything depends on the working man to produce what goes into the world market. We are very proud of the fact that our products are sold in the USA and shipped worldwide.

LODGING & RESTAURANTS:
People come from miles around to enjoy food and drink in the company of some of the most friendly folks in the state. This is done at our thriving business called Ye Old Beer Barn.

LOCAL LEGENDS & HISTORY:
One mile southwest of our town, as the crow flies, we have 18 acres of virgin prairie ground that have never had a plow in it. It has flowers and ground cover that is constant to years gone by. This is called The Dinesen Prairie, which is visited by hundreds each year. These acres were donated to the local historical society by a gentleman named Darrell Dinesen, who has since passed away. In his memory, a large stone marker was brought in from South Dakota and placed on the prairie ground.

FESTIVALS & CELEBRATIONS:
Our town celebrated its 100th anniversary in June of 1992. Since that date, we have an annual celebration on the 3rd Saturday in June every year. From the proceeds we built a community building and even though we are still putting on the finishing touches, we have held several graduation parties, birthday parties and wedding receptions at our building.

CHURCHES:
The one church we have, The United Methodist, was built in 1894. It is one of the most native churches in the district with a membership of 67. The church has activities almost bi-weekly.

BRAGGING RIGHTS:
Lowell Thomas, well-known world traveler and famous news commentator of radio & T.V., started his education in Kirkman. He died in 1981 at the age of 89 and is buried in upper state New York.

MISCELLANEOUS:
We are surrounded by recreational activities. Fishermen relax at Prairie Rose Lake, which is within 10 miles. Golfing is available at a very well developed course nearby. Camping sites are available at both areas. We also have a small city park with a shelter house.
