Farmers Mutual Cooperative Telephone
Company provides Internet access, paging, voice mail, calling cards, cellular service,
along with state of the art 100% digitally switched calling since 1988. Local service
is provided to 580 square miles of Shelby, Pottawattamie, Crawford, and Audubon
counties. Cable TV is provided to Earling, the Fifty-niner Motel and expansion
plans include Westphalia, Kirkman and other FMCTC service areas. FMCTC offers
free custom calling features such as: call forwarding, call waiting, speed
dialing, and three-way calling. FMCTC customers enjoy equal access for all long
distance calling.
SCHOOLS:
Jackson township children attend Harlan Community Schools,
Elkhorn-Kimballton, and Irwin-Kirkman-Manilla Schools.

TOURIST ATTRACTIONS & RECREATION:
Nearby Prairie Rose State Park is a
beautiful site in the fall. Two local sites listed in the National Register of Historic
Places are Rural Poplar District and the Old Country Schoolhouse that also serves
and a community center and voting site.

AGRICULTURE:
The village of Jacksonville is surrounded by a farming community
which produces corn, soybeans, oats and hay. The farms raise livestock such as
cattle, hogs and sheep.
LOCAL LEGENDS & HISTORY:
Jacksonville was settled by Danish Pioneers in
about 1870. In 1897 we got our post office and the name JACKSONVILLE became
official.
REAL ESTATE:
Nineteen homes comprise the village of Jacksonville. Farms and
acreages surround the village.
CHURCHES:
Bethlehem Lutheran Church is located one mile west of Jacksonville
and the Lutheran and Adventist cemetery is adjacent to it.
LIBRARY:
Citizens of Jacksonville enjoy library privileges in nearby Harlan,
Kimballton and Elk Horn.
BRAGGING RIGHTS:
Jacksonville is the only village in eastern Shelby County that
still has thriving businesses.
