HISTORY:
A small cluster of homes were built in the 1880's near the Westfork River in Willow Township. There was a little store selling the main essentials needed by the families. These early residents gave no name to the settlement until the Milwaukee Railroad was built. The railroad officials and Mr. D. W. Skinner, owner of the Skinner Ranch east of town, thought there should be a name given to the settlement. The name of Hornick, after John Hornick, who owned land adjoining the town, was chosen for the settlement. Hornick became officially known in 1887, the year the railroad was completed. Hornick centennial was celebrated in July, 1987.

LODGING AND TOURIST ATTRACTIONS:
Iva Belle Bed and Breakfast is located on the northwest edge of Hornick. The house which was built in 1914, has a parlor and six bedrooms. The owners, Phil & Peggy Fedderson, spent 2 years refurbishing the 80-year-old home. The house had been empty for many years. The movie, "Children of the Corn", was filmed at this house in the late summer of 1983. Victorian decorating and antiques, as well as colors and decors, bring each of the unique rooms to life (712/874-3769).

Hornick is centrally located to several popular tourist attractions: The Loess Hills Scenic Drive, which has one landmark near Hornick, "Sugar Loaf", the name given to one of the knolls located 3 miles east of Hornick; Winnavagas Casino, Sloan, Iowa and Brown's Lake, Salix, Iowa are all located within a fifteen-minute drive.

The depot was closed in 1980, but opened for the public viewing during the 1987 Centennial. In 1988 the depot became a chapter of the Siouxland Historical Railroad Association. The Depot now is a museum and is opened to the public every Sunday during the months of June through October, or by appointment (712/874-3417). The museum has a caboose, which is located on a section of track, where the original track was. Soon an 1893 veterinary barn will be re-located near the museum.
