small cooperative owned by local shareholders. It is an equal access cooperative through Iowa
Network Services.
EDUCATION:
Ellsworth is part of the South Hamilton School District. Enrollment figures for
elementary (K-4) is around 290, for junior high (5-8) nearly 250 and for high school (9-12)
approximately 230. The district is made up of students from the towns of Ellsworth, Jewell,
Randall and Stanhope.
WELCOME:
Ellsworth is a bustling community of 490 people. We have nearly forty businesses
in town, two congregations, a park, are the home of Uncle B's Bagels, and we are on the move!
CULTURAL AND RECREATIONAL FACILITIES:
Ellsworth's Public Library is open a variety
of hours to serve the needs of local patrons. The City Park is located in the northern section of
town and is attractively surrounded by newly planted trees, and new play equipment was recently
installed by volunteers. Saturday night BINGO draws in a crowd of nearly 150 to the Community
Center each week. Main Street comes alive for Wednesday Night Live each Wednesday evening
during the summer as young and old gather for barbeque and entertainment. Little Wall Lake is
just three miles away. It attracts boaters, anglers, campers and picnickers.
Many cultural and recreational opportunities are available because of Ellsworth's proximity to Ames.
LODGING & RESTAURANTS:
Rose's Cafe is open to serve breakfast and lunch. It is located
on Highway 175. Deli services and catering are available from A&M Market, the local grocery
store on Main Street.
CHURCHES:
The total number of religious congregations is three; two Protestant and one
Catholic. The Catholic church is located in Jewell, three miles away.
ORGANIZATIONS:
Boy Scouts
Deb Hart Club
Ellsworth Community Association
Ellsworth Development Corporation
4-H
GH Study Club
AGRICULTURE:
The primary crops grown in the Ellsworth area are corn and soybeans. Some
farmers also own cattle and hogs. The hog industry has grown in recent years and a number of
hog confinements have been erected, replacing what once was farm ground. Although there are
fewer farmers than a generation ago, farming continues to be the predominate method of earning
a living in rural central Iowa. Turkey farms once played a major part of Ellsworth's economy, but
in recent years this has declined.
BUSINESS:
Ellsworth has a Development Group and a Community Association. Both
organizations work toward betterment of Ellsworth. In 1995, Ellsworth became CEPP Certified
in the Commercial Category. This means that they are prepared to help a business locate and/or
expand in this community that is "on the move".
