LOCAL LEGENDS & HISTORY:
Decatur County was organized in 1850-named after Steven Decatur
who was a navel hero from the war of 1812. Leon, Iowa was
selected as the county seat and the original courthouse was built
in 1854. The area attracted a well-minded collection of settlers
diversified by their ethnic backgrounds and religious beliefs.
