LOCATION:
Cleghorn is located in western Cherokee County, 50 miles northeast of Sioux City on State Highway 3. Cleghorn is on the main railroad shipping line between Sioux City and Chicago. We have a strong agricultural based economy and our area is highly productive.

TELEPHONE COMPANY & FIRE DEPT. SERVICES:
The C-M-L Telephone Cooperative Association provides private line telephone service to the towns of Meriden, Archer, and Cleghorn. This was the first telephone exchange in the United States to receive approval for an REA loan for private line services with burried cable.

Our local Fire Department is not municipal controlled, however, it is supported by the City of Cleghorn and portions of Liberty, Sheridan, and Rock Townships. It is an up-to-date facility with First Responders and they do make "House Calls."

SCHOOLS:
The Marcus, Meriden, Cleghorn Community School District has an enrollment of 628 students. The Middle School is located in Cleghorn, the High School and some elementary classes are in Marcus, and some elementary classes are in Meriden. The district is debt free.

AGRICULTURE:
Our regional economy is strongly agricultural based with cattle, hogs, sheep, corn, and soybeans as the major source of income.

FESTIVALS:
We hold an annual "Ice Cream Day" the second Saturday of June each year. An interesting afternoon and evening is topped off with free ice cream.

HISTORY:
Cleghorn celebrated their centennial in 1990. The Cherokee County Historical Society is located in Cleghorn.

The Cleghorn Lions Club was chartered in September, 1948, and actively supports the community.

CHURCHES:
The First Presbyterian Church was established in 1882 and the Church of Chist was established in 1893. There is a Catholic church 5 miles south of Cleghorn as well as one in Marcus, 5 miles to the west. Marcus also has several churches of other faiths.

LODGING & RESTAURANTS:
Our community is served by a retaurant and catering service as well as a convenience store operation. National franchise motels are located in Cherokee, 10 miles away.

REAL ESTATE:
Cleghorn has a number of choice lots, reasonably priced, for new housing. Normally, we do not have many homes for sale.

BUSINESS & INDUSTRY:
Located in Cleghorn is Wetherell Manufacturing, manufacturers of agricultural equipment, hydraulic cylinders, and cable TV and taylor Refrigeration, Inc. who manufacture and service commercial refrigeration cases. Our local bank of over 100 years recently merged with First Trust and Savings Bank, Aurelia, Iowa, and is a very solid institution. Our Cooperative grain elevator recently merged with 14 other area elevators and is now known as First Cooperative Association.
Other businesses in our area are: Country Pines (Christmas Tree Farm); CVS Fertilizer, Inc.; Cleghorn "C" (convenience) Store; Coop tank wagon service; Mike's Electric; Sue's Cafe; U.S. Post Office; Jim Draper, Handyman; Miller Repair; Pam's Beauty Shop; and Northwest Iowa Realty.

LIBRARY:
The M-C Community Library is a joint venture between the MMC School District and the City of Cleghorn and is 10 years old. It is one of two certified libraries in Cherokee County, the other one is located at Marcus. Services provided in addition to books, include video tapes, books on tape, 3 computers with Internet accessibility, Fax and copy machines, and many novelty cake pans for check-out.

BRAGGING RIGHTS:
We have the choice industrial area in Cherokee County accessible to the Illinois Central Railroad right of way, and it is available. Our property taxes are the lowest in Cherokee County.
