LOCATION:
Castana is located in the heart of the Loess Hills 12 miles northeast of Onawa and 9 miles south of Mapleton on Highway 175. It is 55 miles southeast of Sioux City in Monona County.

TELEPHONE COMPANY:
Western Iowa Telephone Association is a member-owned cooperative providing telecommunications services to eleven rural communities in northwest Iowa. Local exchange service is provided to 3,300 customers from eight digitally-switched exchanges. All interoffice and long distance connections are provided over a fiber optic network, and equal access for long distance services is available to all customers. All buried outside plant provides reliable, high-quality voice and data circuits for business and residential customers.

SCHOOLS:
Children in kindergarten attend school at Mapleton. First through fourth graders attend classes in Castana. The fifth and sixth graders go to Danbury, the seventh and eighth graders go to Anthon and the high school students are at Mapleton. The school system is called Maple Valley/Anthon-Oto.

TOURIST ATTRACTIONS & RECREATION:
The Loess Hills is the NUMBER ONE attraction in the area. Timber Ridge, located NW of Castana, is Monona County's hunting reserve. Seven months out of the year, September through March, people can come there to hunt quail, pheasant, wild turkey and deer when in season. Hunting packages are available--for information call 1-712-353-6600. For members there are various forms of recreation available such as 4 wheeling and motorcycle trails where you can drive through the hills and see some beautiful fall foliage. For membership information call 1-712-353-6600. Timber Ridge also has a sawmill where trees from a one hundred mile radius are brought to be cut. BUSINESS & INDUSTRY:
Castana Grain, Davis Well & Trenching, Burke's Grocery, Brad Hanson Seed Corn Dealer, Silver Dollar Bar, Davis Trucking, Richard R. Davis Trucking, Kessler Pottery, Doug Thelander Plumbing, Bruning Inc.(a parts and implement business), Timber Ridge, Adams Engineering and Manufacturing(manufactures items for the handicapped), A & B Trucking, Lamb Construction, The Barn Door (drapery & gift shop), Charles John Hinrickson (masonry contractor) and the Maple Valley Elementary School.

AGRICULTURE:
Corn, soybeans, cattle, hogs and sheep are raised in the predominately agricultural area.

LOCAL HISTORY:
The town of Castana was incorporated in 1886. The streets of the town have never been paved.

CHURCHES:
Castana Community United Church of Christ is the only church in town.

ORGANIZATIONS:
The Federated Women's Club has 2 groups--the Castana Junior 76'ers established in 1976 and a Thursday Club which was begun around the turn of the century. There is also an American Legion and an American Legion Auxiliary, plus a 4-H club called the Wildcats.

MISCELLANEOUS:
The Castana Junior 76ers host the annual Easter Egg Hunt. The Castana City Council host the annual Santa Claus Day. The American Legion and American Legion Auxiliary host a ham dinner every fall. The Community United Church of Christ host an annual pancake supper in the beginning of the year and an ice cream social and turkey supper every fall.
