LOCATION:
Located in Northwest Iowa along the Floyd River in Sioux County, Alton is at the intersection of Highways 10 & 60. Highway 60, part of the Sioux City/Twin Cities corridor, is a division of the National Highway system. Rail service is provided by the Union Pacific Railroad.

West Iowa Telephone provides service to the community and local internet access. A variety of long distance services are available.

SCHOOLS:
There are three regional school systems: MOC-Floyd Valley Public, Spalding Catholic, and Orange City and Unity Christian in Orange City. Access to Northwest Iowa Community College, and several four year institutions, Northwestern College, Orange City; Dordt College, Sioux Center; and Westmar University, Le Mars; provide a variety of post-secondary educational opportunities.

Although Alton offers a small town atmosphere, it is conveniently located to metropolitan regions, including Sioux Falls, SD, and Sioux City, IA. Within a fifty mile radius of Alton, the population is over 200,000. Our excellent highway system allows easy access to surrounding regions for trade and commuting. The time for commuting to Sioux Falls, SD, is approximately one hour of leisurely driving. Generally, in metropolitan areas, much more time is spent commuting to and from the central district.

TOURIST ATTRACTIONS:
The city museum houses a miniature 1930's replica of Alton. Visiting the Museum can be arranged by contacting the Alton Savings Bank at (712) 756-4125. The city has excellent park and recreation facilities which include "The Alton Roadside Park" and the Puddle Jumper Trail, a two mile trail connecting Alton and Orange City. For those enjoying water sports, canoeing and stream and pond fishing are available. The city has approximately two miles of snowmobile trails running throughout the city, and the path joins the snowmobile trail system in Northwest Iowa.

AGRICULTURE:
The region's agricultural economy is strong and diversified. Exceptional soil and weather conditions permit consistent crop production. Corn and soybean crops are the mainstay in the region. Sioux County is also one of the leading livestock producers in Iowa.

LODGING & RESTAURANTS:
Alton features the famous "OK" Cafe and Firelite Lanes for dining enjoyment. The Double "D" Bar also provides entertainment and refreshments. Reservations for lodging can be made at the Dutch Colony Inn, (712) 737-3490, which is conveniently located two miles west of Alton on Highway 10.

HISTORY:
Alton has a long and proud history dating from 1870 when pioneers from eastern Iowa settled along the Floyd River. Alton quickly became a hub for the region. It also served as an important junction for the railroad with lines connecting east/west and north/south. Alton's early days included an opera house and numerous hotels for the traveling public. In the 1890's, Alton established the region's first public water system. Alton maintained a steady population until the 1980's when the population started to climb due to new housing developments. FESTIVALS & CELEBRATIONS:
The Alton Chamber sponsors the annual Christmas parade and house decorating contest in December and Customer Appreciation Days in September. The Alton Snowmobile Club holds the Annual Snow Show and Poker Run in January. Every year, over 150 snowmobiles enter the race and show.

REAL ESTATE:
Over the past few years, there has been a consistent increase in new construction and sites are available for new development. Local churches include: St. Mary's Catholic Church, the American Reformed Church, the Presbyterian Church, and Westminster Reformed Church.

LIBRARY:
Alton's Library has a circulation of nearly 13,000 books, computer applications, and audio-video materials. The library offers on-line research facilities and inter-library loan service. The hours are as follows: Monday to Friday - 10:00 A.M. - 5:00 P.M., Thursday evening - 6:30 P.M. - 9:00 P.M., and Saturday 10:00 A.M. - 3:00 P.M. The library is closed on Sundays.

BRAGGING RIGHTS:
The Sioux Golf and Country Club is the oldest nine hole golf course in Iowa and recently was selected as Iowa's Nine Hole Course of the Year.

MISCELLANEOUS:
City Administrator, Michael Daspit, is the point of contact for economic development. A variety of incentives are available for businesses and industries locating in Alton. Property tax asking have declined over the last three years. Alton provides municipal electric and water services and Alton residents enjoy significantly lower electric rates. Electric power is provided through the Western Area Power Administration and Missouri Basin Municipal Power Agency.
